You’ll likely get nailed by local and state law enforcement if you drive hammered… that’s the message today from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission, as they begin their “Drive Hammered, Get Nailed” campaign.
The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office and Bellingham, Ferndale and Western Washington University police are joining the state patrol in the effort locally.

Western Washington University biology and science education specialist Associate Professor Alejandro Acevedo has been studying the interaction between the pups and tourists at the pool, where the pups play and rest before going back to the shore to nurse from their mothers.
He has monitored the seal pups and found they go to the waterfall in April, about five to six months after they were born.
The Washington State Community Economic Revitalization Board (CERB) has selected 10 projects to receive a formal Request for Proposal (RFP) to compete for $3 million in loans and grants from the new Export Assistance Program.
The Export Assistance Program is an integral component of Gov. Chris Gregoire's state export initiative. The initiative also directs the state to help 5,000 Washington businesses achieve $600 million in new export sales. A review panel consisting of CERB members and experts in state export promotion evaluated 31 proposed projects supporting growth of Washington state product and service exports. The 10 finalist projects, totaling $5.5 million, are now invited to submit a full proposal for further consideration.
Two Whatcom County high school graduates recently received $1,000 scholarships from the Northwest Washington Fair.
Elizabeth Kayser, Lynden High School, has been involved in a variety of different fair activities, but she really enjoys showing cattle. She plans to attend Western Washington University to major in broadcast journalism and minor in political science.

Excellent racing by the Unlimited Light hydroplanes warmed up a drizzly day in Seattle. Paul Becker led the way with heat victories in 1B and 2A and both were closely contested. Becker, driving the UL-14 Sammamish Mortgage-Western Washington University College of Engineering and Technology-GO NAVY took first place over Kayleigh Perkins in the UL-72 Foster Care-Triad Racing Technologies in a battle to the finish line. Both drivers had to overhaul Rod Bourke in the UL-5 Vestus Foreclosure Group who won the start and led much of the first lap before finishing third.
Roland L. "Larry" De Lorme, a retired Western Washington University administrator and history professor credited with starting several campus programs, died Sunday, Aug. 1. He was 73.
