Western Washington University is looking to cut about another $3 million from the operating budget after state revenue projections show a growing deficit.

Gov. Chris Gregoire announced Thursday, Sept. 16, that the anticipated state deficit has grown to about $520 million through mid-2011, driven mostly by low tax collections. To help close the deficit, Gregoire is asking most state departments to cut about 6.3 percent of spending.

Neighborhoods around Western Washington University are about to get a lot busier as students move in before classes start Wednesday, Sept. 22.

About 4,000 students are expected to move into WWU's residence halls and apartments from Friday through Sunday.

During move-in time, stores and restaurants, especially in nearby Sehome Village, can be crowded with students and their families.

One of those companies, I would like to add as a personal note, was one composed mostly of students from Western Washington University and led in part by my step-brother, Eric Leonhardt. Their Viking 45 gas-electric hybrid (second row, on the right above) made it all the way to the finals. I just wanted to congratulate the WWU team and teams like it; this is a fantastic application of public money and of students’ time.
