It didn't take Calvin Collander long to prove how much talent he had after he joined the Sehome cross country team in the fall of 2007.

The Mariners took him to the Nike Pre Nationals at Portland (Ore.) Meadows three years ago, and he ended up placing second in the freshmen race behind only teammate Scott Carlyle. Considering Carlyle went on to two straight top-five finishes at the Class 2A Cross Country State Championships, including an individual state title last year, that's pretty good company to be in.

Western Washington University will host an Outdoor Center Gear Grab from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, in the Viking Union Multipurpose Room.

Students and vendors can sell any type of new or used outdoor gear. WWU or Whatcom Community College students can sell their gear for free, but vendors must pay $10.

Faculty members Khim Sim, Z. George Zhang, Matthew Roelofs and Mary Sass received the Dennis R. Murphy Faculty Research Award, and faculty member Earl Benson received the David Merrifield Faculty Research Award.

He points to a biogas project at Western Washington University in Bellingham. Dairy manure is being converted to power a new fueling station. The project is close to operational. Beginning next year shuttles from Sea-Tac to Bellingham will use the biogas.

Voters on Tuesday removed taxes on candy and soft drinks and Gregoire says that's bad news for the state.

The exact effect of Tuesday's initiative votes still is being sorted out at the state Capitol, but one thing is known: Budget writers in Olympia have deeper spending cuts to make.

Voters overwhelmingly repealed a collection of new taxes on pop, candy and gum, erasing $272.4 million in revenue that the state would have received through mid-2013.

Initiative 1107, which the national soda industry backed with more than $16 million, was passing by a wide margin.

Hampered by a season-low hitting percentage of .107, Western Washington University saw its eight-match winning streak snapped, falling to Seattle Pacific University, 20-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-18, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference volleyball match Thursday, Nov. 4, between two nationally ranked teams in Seattle.

The defeat means the Vikings, ranked No. 13 in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association/NCAA Division II Top 25 Poll and No. 2 in the West Region, fall to 16-3 overall and slip into second place in the GNAC at 13-2.

Forward Tyler Amaya scored a game-high 28 points, leading Team Another Level to a 109-98 victory over Western Washington University in a men's basketball exhibition contest Thursday, Nov. 4, at WWU.

Forwards Michael Duty and Zach Henifin and junior guard Shedrick Nelson each had 17 points for Western.

Forward Gibson Bardsley and midfielder Jin Dangvan each had goals as Western Washington University blanked Saint Martin's University 2-0 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's soccer game Thursday, Nov. 4, at Whatcom Community College.

Western improved to 9-6-2 overall and 4-4-1 in the GNAC with its sixth win in the last eight games.

Western Washington University volleyball outside hitter Kathryn Mertens has been named to the ESPN Academic All-District college division second team.

Mertens, a senior from Olympia, is a biology/anthropology major with a 3.90 grade point average.

The 5-foot-10 Mertens has played in every set this season, averaging 1.95 kills on .277 hitting, 0.60 blocks and 0.48 digs.
