Veterans Day has an international flavor for Ron and Barbara Crabtree of Lynden.

That can happen with four boys stationed near and far in the military.

For their latest family outing, Ron and Barbara are off to Egypt, and maybe to South Korea, too.

While the job market remains difficult, it's great to see some optimism from local and regional employers.

Last week I dropped in at Western Washington University's fall business career fair, held at the Wade King Student Recreation Center. Recruiters from a variety of companies set up booths and talked to students and members of the community about available job positions.

What was different about this job fair compared to the past couple of years was the enthusiasm from the recruiters. The 57 employers in attendance was up from 44 in the fall of 2009, said Aaron Ignac, assistant director of operations at Western's Career Services Center. He also noted more of the employers were looking to fill positions right now, along with internships.

And the idea is spreading. Ask Ryan Hashagen.

"We just got off the Metrolink in San Diego," Hashagen, 28, panted into his cell phone Oct. 14. "Now we're about to catch the bus from Oceanside to San Diego. Tomorrow we'll cross the border and start catching buses to Mazatlan."

This winter, Hashagen, who operates a pedicab and ice-cream tricycle company during Portland summers, is making his way from Bellingham to Puerto Varas, Chile, by a combination of municipal transit agencies, jitneys and regional buses, filling in the gaps with hitchhiking. With him is a friend who is Chilean, Lale Lorski.

It didn't take Calvin Collander long to prove how much talent he had after he joined the Sehome cross country team in the fall of 2007.

The Mariners took him to the Nike Pre Nationals at Portland (Ore.) Meadows three years ago, and he ended up placing second in the freshmen race behind only teammate Scott Carlyle. Considering Carlyle went on to two straight top-five finishes at the Class 2A Cross Country State Championships, including an individual state title last year, that's pretty good company to be in.
