Whatcom County is lucky to have the new Innovation Resource Center, a privately created organization that aims to help entrepreneurs thrive in Whatcom County, particularly through accelerator programs that help find funding and support for new businesses.

We recently met with John Sechrest, the new executive director of the IRC, Diane Kamionka, one of the founders of the organization, and Debbie Ahl, chairman of the organization's board. At the meeting Sechrest told us that he is excited about Whatcom County and sees "no shortage of opportunities" for new economic growth here.

A task force charged with finding stable money to pay for higher education in Washington state has some ideas it wants the Legislature to consider.

At the top of its list announced Monday: Find someone other than state government to pay the bill.

The task force formed by Gov. Chris Gregoire wants donations from individuals and corporations to finance a new scholarship fund. And it wants to allow state colleges to raise their own tuition to keep Washington tuition and fees comparable to charges at similar institutions in other states. Currently the Legislature sets tuition.

One hundred and thirteen artists from 40 cities around Washington have been accepted into the CVG Show, Collective Visions Art Gallery’s fourth annual statewide juried arts show.

The competition is the largest juried art show in Kitsap County and one of the largest in the state. More than 700 artworks were submitted by 224 artists via a state-of-the-art web-based entry system called “Call for Entry” or “CaFE.”

I’ve been eager to report the following news for more than two weeks. Finally, the timing is right.

Former Washington Secretary of State Ralph Munro is on the road to recovery after open-heart surgery Dec. 14 at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia.

The heart surgery to repair a leaky mitral valve and fix an irregular heartbeat was followed by additional surgeries to stem post-surgical bleeding, repair a collapsed lung and readjust a wire in his chest.

Guard Kristin Schramm came off the bench to score 19 points to spur the Western Washington University women's basketball team to a 68-51 win over Northwest Nazarene University in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action on Saturday, Jan. 1, in Nampa.

The Vikings improved to 9-1 overall with their fourth straight win, including 2-0 in GNAC play. Western was ranked No. 18 in the latest Division II national poll.

In 2010, Western Washington University continued its dominance on the athletic field.

Team highlights start with the women's rowing team with its sixth consecutive national championship. Both Viking basketball teams also reached their respective West Regional in 2010, with the men reaching the semifinals, where they lost in overtime to the eventual national champion.

The PME Scholarship Intern Program, designed to increase career opportunities for Suquamish tribal members, provides a full college scholarship for recipients including tuition, books, room, board and a monthly stipend. Interns are also given positions at the tribally-owned company during summer months, gaining knowledge in hospitality and gaming management.

Currently, PME has two scholarship interns at various stages in their educational careers including George and Lisa Jackson-Nickel, a Western Washington University junior. Previous graduates of the program include Brittany Bakken, Nigel Lawrence and Nic’Cola Armstrong and Veronica Rhodes.
