Charlotte Guyette directs John Guare's "Landscape of the Body," a complex, non-linear drama about a family that's gone awry, empty dreams and the rippling effects of death.

The production is on stage at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 20-22, continuing Jan. 27-29, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23 and Jan. 30 at Western Washington University's Mainstage Theatre.

Media's role in democracy and the nature of people and politics were the topics of the League of Women Voters of Whatcom County's meeting Saturday, Jan. 15.
The discussion drew more than 50 people to the Bellingham Public Library's lecture room to hear about the importance of deliberation in a democracy.
Speaker Johann Neem, from Western Washington University's history department, talked about the fight between making choices based on interests rather than deliberating. Through deliberation, he said, people can gain a better understanding of the issues and the people on both sides of them.

For decades, buses around the world have rolled down city streets with characteristic flat fronts, even though that's not exactly aerodynamic.
They don't have to be that way. In fact, the driver doesn't even have to sit at the left front, and passengers don't have to load across from the driver.
Western Washington University students working near Bellingham's waterfront are exploring new concepts as they work to create a low-weight, high-efficiency bus. Undergraduates from various majors are doing everything from materials testing to body design, with the goal of having a prototype ready in 2013.

Melissa Schenter, 20, is a junior at Western Washington University, majoring in theater with a concentration in acting. She takes on the challenging character of Betty in Western's production of John Guare's adult drama, "Landscape of the Body," on stage Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 20-22 and Jan. 27-29, as well as at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23 and Jan. 30, at WWU's Performing Arts Mainstage Theatre. She's originally from the Tri-Cities and graduated from Richland High School in 2008. She's done a bit of acting, singing and film.

U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson hosted a 25th reunion of the Columbia shuttle crew he joined during a weekend of celebrating their giddy success while also somberly reflecting on the dangers of human spaceflight.

The Orlando Democrat hosted crew members for a dinner at his home Saturday. He then led them on a Sunday tour of the Capitol, with a pause for a moment of silence at a first-floor painting of the crew of shuttle Challenger, which blew up 10 days after Nelson's flight landed.

"That's what makes us gathering up all the more special to me," Nelson said.

Western Washington University's Sheila Webb, an assistant professor of journalism, will discuss how photojournalism helped increase understanding of science and technology advances in the early 1900s in a lecture Wed., Jan. 19.
Webb's lecture, "Prowess Unlimited: The Portrayal of Science & Technology in Life Magazine in the 1930s and 1940s," is part of the Turning Points lecture series.

Guard John Allen had 31 points and guard Shedrick Nelson came off the bench to score a season-high 26 as Western Washington University defeated University of Alaska Fairbanks 108-96 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball game Thursday, Jan. 13, at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus.

The Vikings improved to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in the GNAC, and remained unbeaten in seven home games this season.
