Friends of an exchange student who studied at Western Washington University are still waiting to hear if he survived the disaster in Japan.

"I couldn't sleep well last night," said Chi Xiong, one of Masataka Sugasawa's friends. "I kept waking up off and on."

Xiong is still studying in Bellingham at Western.

Twenty-five University of Washington students are studying abroad in Japan, and the university has heard from almost half of them and confirmed they are safe following the earthquake and tsunami that devastated the northeastern part of the country.

One student is in Sendai, the city closest to the earthquake's epicenter, and is reportedly safe, said Brent Barker, travel security and information manager for the UW's Office of Global Affairs. Eleven students have so far responded to messages from the university, and all say they are OK.

Western Washington University's Dylan Goodwin has been named Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men's Golfer of the Week for March 6-12. It is the second time this season that he has received the weekly honor.

Goodwin, a sophomore from Mukilteo, finished second at the Cal State East Bay Pioneer Shootout in helping the Vikings to their fourth team title in six tournaments during the 2010-11 campaign.

The Hockinson High School gradaute, two-time Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion in the indoor 5,000, ranks second in Division II in the event with a time of 16 minutes, 11.98 seconds.
