Western Washington University women's basketball guard Amanda Dunbar was named a Division II Bulletin second-team All-American in an announcement by the school on Monday, March 28.

During her senior season, Dunbar, who received honorable mention last year, averaged 13.1 points and 4.0 assists, second in the GNAC, in helping the Vikings to a 26-4 record, first-place in the GNAC regular-season standings, and the first round of the NCAA Division II West Regional.

Anyone who cares about Lake Whatcom or clean drinking water has to be discouraged by the findings in the 2010 Lake Whatcom Monitoring Program.

The annual report compiled by scientists at Western Washington University has documented significant problems in the lake for more than two decades. Thirteen years ago, in 1998, the lake was listed as an "impaired waterbody" under the Clean Water Act because of a lack of oxygen.

Pasco High graduate Alison Luhrs desperately wanted to make her father, the late Kurt Luhrs, proud by taking up gymnastics as a kid.

But it was not for her.

"My dad tried so hard to get me into gymnastics, but I was never flexible enough," she explained. "I love the sport, but I'm lousy at it myself."

Instead, she found her mojo in comedy while attending Western Washington University in Bellingham. She joined the university's Dead Parrots Society, an improv comedy troupe.

Western Washington University's Jordan Welling broke his own school record in the men's 5,000 meters with a NCAA Division II provisional national qualifying time of 14 minutes, 10.43 seconds on Friday, March 25, at the 37th annual Stanford University Track and Field Invitational at Palo Alto, Calif.
