Typhoon hits Philippines, students respond

As Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines Monday, Nov. 11, Western Washington University students with ties to the island nation turned to the news and their families for information.
Typhoon Haiyan, known as Yolanda in the Philippines, hit the area the morning of Friday, Nov. 8, bringing with it sustained winds of 195 mph and gusts as fast as 235 mph. A 20-foot storm surge pushed water into the city of Tacloban — home to more than 200,000 people.
