Tenor follows his voice to higher places

Being a singer can be confusing. And exhilarating. Just ask Gregory Carroll, who's had both experiences.

For years, the native of Des Moines, Wash., was a baritone, though some teachers believed him to be a tenor. Finally, Carroll followed the destiny of his voice with help from Jane Eaglen, the noted British soprano who urged him to make the tricky switch upward.

"When you've got to change that which you've ingrained in your fiber, that can be a slow, painful process," Carroll said recently.
