Editorial: One man, many students

Two-thirds of Jefferson County residents choose to live in the rural communities of the county. These are smart people.

So smart, in fact, that they deserve easy access to higher education programs – including advanced degrees – without having to move to an urban center and trudge through the rain with a bundle of textbooks.

Since 1999, Matt Lyons of Port Ludlow – a former military hospital administrator – has been performing the service of connecting rural residents to college programs and degrees. As the one and only staff of the grandly named Jefferson Education Center (JEC), Lyons has used his Rhody Drive office in Port Hadlock as a universal college counseling service.
