International Education Week full of fun, informative events
Western Washington University joins institutions throughout the country in celebrating International Education Week. Sponsored by the U.S. departments of State and Education, the week was established to “promote programs to prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the U.S.”
Campus events are free and open to students, faculty staff and the Bellingham community.
In addition to the events below, world knowledge quizzes will be taking place throughout the week at surprise locations on campus. Test your knowledge and win a prize.
Monday, November 10:
“Are You a Global Citizen?”

Join a panel of Western students, staff and faculty to discuss the idea of global citizenship, its implications, its challenges and its goals.
Wednesday, November 12
World Issues Forum: “Gaza: Then and Now”
Noon - 1:20 p.m. | Fairhaven Auditorium | Free
Craig and Cindy Corrie advocates for human rights and peace with justice in Palestine & the Middle East; parents of Rachel Corrie, killed by an Israeli Bulldozer in Gaza in 2003.
Radio Bikini
5:30 p.m. | Viking Union 552 | Free
Reel World Film Series presents the film Radio Bikini, an internationally acclaimed, award-winning documentary film about the greatest operations to test nuclear weapons ever conducted by the United States. Using rare and mostly never-before-seen archival footage, the film unfolds through the eyes of the elderly chief of the Bikinians, Kilon Bauno, and a former American serviceman, John Smitherman, who was there. Radio Bikini combines “live” radio broadcasts from Bikini in 1946 with footage of the entire operation, recreating a feeling of the event as it happened in a way that is both haunting and surreal. (56 minutes).

Blessing Ngobeni

Blessing Ngobeni, a Johannesburg-based painter and printmaker, will speak about his personal journey from runaway to jailtime to redemption through art.
Friday, November 14
Speed Travel!
3:30-4:30 p.m. | Miller Hall Collaborative Space | Free
Take a trip around the globe with WWU international students! You’ll be issued a passport and itinerary before you embark on your travels. At each station, WWU international students will share a game, craft, language lesson, dance move, or other activity from their country. For each activity you complete, you’ll get a stamp in your passport. Those who fill up their passports will be entered in a drawing for a fun travel-related prize. Explore the World at Western!
