'Innovative Teaching Showcase' is June 10

Western Washington University’s Center for Instructional Innovation and Assessment  will hold its annual “Innovative Teaching Showcase Learning Event” from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, June 10, in Wilson Library 270.

The theme of this year's showcase is “Teaching Civic Engagement.” Community members are invited to meet the featured instructors, view videotaped interviews with those instructors and find out more about how instructors at Western are incorporating civic engagement opportunities in their courses.

This “learning event” celebrates the completion of the CIIA’s new online edition of its “Innovative Teaching Showcase,” detailing innovative teaching practices of several WWU faculty members:

  • Robin Kodner, an assistant professor in the biology department, teaches biometrics by drawing upon her background as an outdoor science educator and her interest in making statistics exciting for students by connecting the “data” to real-world applications and helping local non-profit agencies.
  • Gene Myers, a professor in the environmental studies department, brings his philosophy for empowering students to make decisions about their education and the world to all his courses, focusing on experiential education opportunities that will shape their experience with this planet for a lifetime.
  • Sheila Webb, an associate professor in the journalism department, creates authentic and engaging “client interactions” for her advanced visual journalism students by having them work in teams with community partners to develop marketing and media materials, mostly for nonprofit social service organizations.
