Historic photos from North Cascades available online at Western

The Center for Pacific Northwest Studies at Western Washington University invites the public to enjoy historic photographs, now available online, that depict hardy people camping, hiking, skiing and snowshoeing in the North Cascades.

The historic photos are from the Mount Baker (Hiking) Club and local photographers Galen Biery, Bert Huntoon and Henry C. Engberg.

These photos and others are available via Western Libraries online.

North Cascades images and photo albums are drawn from three separate (and larger) collections at CPNWS:

  • The Galen Biery Papers and Photographs. Galen Biery was a long-term Pacific American Fisheries employee and also a well-known and much beloved local historian. Many community members remember his “lantern slideshow” presentations regarding local history, and he was co-author of the recently republished “Looking Back.” His collection at CPNWS includes a vast array of research files, maps and photographs.
  • Mount Baker (Hiking) Club Records. A rich collection documenting club history and activities from 1925 onward.
  • H.C. Engberg Photographs. The collection comprises one album of "Mt. Baker Bellingham, Wash." Images and additional photographs were taken by Bellingham pharmacist Henry C. Engberg (who was married to the noted female conductor, Mary Davenport Engberg.)

The Center for Pacific Northwest Studies seeks to enhance public and scholarly understanding of the region’s past and present through expansion of its archival holdings, public programming, and publications.
