'Guitars of Western' to play concert Friday, May 11

The WWU Department of Music will present the “Guitars of Western” in concert at 8 p.m. on Friday, May 11, in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.

The performance is free and open to the public.

A unique concert, the evening will present the Guitars of Western as an 11-member orchestra.

“This concert represents a wonderful collaboration between my students and me as well as for my students with one another,” shares WWU Guitar Area coordinator David Feingold. “Classical guitarists usually work as soloists. The collaborative experience is an invaluable one and the performance this week will celebrate their very hard work over the past month in putting these pieces together.”

The evening program will consist of arrangements ranging from “Greensleeves” to Astor Piazzolla’s “L’Evasion” to Leo Brouwer’s beautiful Cuban landscape with “Rain.”

In addition, the audience will hear the world premiere of Feingold’s “ Letter from Zamalek” for a guitar trio. This 10-minute work will be performed by two current WWU guitar students, Joseph Davis and Kevin Karchner, along with a WWU Music affiliate faculty, Aidrien Wilkins. “Letter from Zamalek” was inspired largely by Feingold’s trip to Cairo which coincided with the “Day of Rage” in January 2011, spawning the Arab Spring.
