'Grandparents U' summer program brings generations together

Western Washington University’s “Grandparents U” summer program for grandparents and their grandchildren ages 7 to 14 will take place in Bellingham July 19 to 20 and in Anacortes Aug. 2 to 3.

Each two-day intergenerational summer program gives participants a chance to spend quality time together while exploring popular topics taught by Western faculty.

The Bellingham program will take place on Western Washington University’s campus; it gives participants a glimpse of campus life with the option to stay overnight together in a University Residence Hall. Topics include:

  • Astronomy – Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, How I Wonder…
  • Geology – Earthquakes and Volcanoes of the Pacific Northwest
  • Chemistry – Not Just Your Parents Chemistry Set
  • Theatre Arts – Telling Our Tale
  • Visual Arts – Sculpture, Watercolor, Tracing and Collage

New this year, “Grandparents U” will offer a program at Western’s Shannon Point Marine Center in Anacortes on Aug. 2 and 3. Participants will be offered a unique opportunity to learn about marine ecology and biology by conducting surveys of rocky intertidal, shoreline, and plankton communities and identifying many of the organisms that live in these habitats.

Early registration is encouraged to reserve space in your favorite program location and topic.

“Grandparents U” is offered in partnership with Western Washington University Extended Education and Western’s Alumni Association. Western Alumni Association members, Western faculty and staff receive a $25 registration discount.
