Governor appoints Abby Ramos as new WWU student trustee

Abigail “Abby” Ramos has been appointed by Gov. Jay Inslee to serve a one-year term as the student trustee at Western Washington University.

“Abigail Ramos is an outstanding student leader who has already demonstrated her commitment to WWU students and the community. She will provide a valuable perspective to the board that will have an impact beyond her term, and her time at Western,” said Gov. Jay Inslee. “I appreciate her willingness to work to ensure that all students continue to receive an excellent education at Western.”

Ramos, a junior at Western whose hometown is Sunnyside, Wash., will serve as student trustee on Western’s Board of Trustees from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. She is majoring in Spanish and Political Science, and minoring in English and Law, Diversity and Justice.

“Western’s Board of Trustees benefits tremendously from the perspective of its student trustees, not just on student issues, but on the institution and its mission as a whole.  Abby Ramos’ experience as a student leader and community organizer will be superb additions to the board’s ability to respond to the needs of Western’s current and future students,” said Western President Bruce Shepard.

As a trustee, Ramos will represent all the citizens of Washington, but also provide a student viewpoint that has proven to be invaluable to the Board of Trustees.

“I’m excited to continue working with and for students of Western and Washington. I hope to continue conversation around accessibility and transparency for students,” Ramos said.

At Western, Ramos has served as vice president for Diversity for the Associated Students. She also was a fellow for the GEAR UP Alumni Leadership Academy; editor-in-chief of the Western student publication AS Review; active in the Western student groups Latino Student Union, MEChA and the Ethnic Student Center; and involved with community organizations such as Familias Unidas por la Justicia and the Migrant Youth Leadership Conference.
