Free webinar at WWU to advise on copyright and fair use laws

Do you wish you knew more about how copyright and fair use laws apply to teaching and research?

The Center for Instructional Innovation and Assessment will provide real-time access to a webinar titled "Copyright and Faculty Rights" from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 12, in Viking Union Room 567. Interested members of the campus community may attend; however, due to limited space, registration is required in advance.

The webinar, from Academic Impressions, will be presented by Kevin L. Smith, J.D. (Duke University) and Steven J. McDonald, J.D. (Rhode Island School of Design), who will cover the following topics:

  • Ownership & management of copyrighted works (your own works and publications)
  • Publication agreements
  • Open content requirements (institutional requirements and open access)
  • Fair use - using and being used (including Google Books)

A recent straw poll at a “Learning Technology Group” meeting resulted in a surprisingly high number of instructors showing interest in this area. Please note that the webinar precedes the noon monthly meeting (same location) of the Learning Technology Group, where the topic of discussion will include copyright, fair use, public domain and Creative Commons licensing.
