Film ‘Club Native’ to be shown at Western Feb. 15

The Associated Students Native American Student Union and Resource and Outreach Programs Social Issues Resource Center will host a showing of the film “Club Native” at 6 p.m. Feb. 15 in Academic Instructional Center Room 210 on the Western Washington University campus.

This event is free. The film looks at Canada’s 1876 Indian Act and the racism and discrimination that followed the act. Club Native examines the stereotypes and laws that marginalize Native American women in the Mohawk Nation and how those laws disenfranchise women when they marry someone outside of the tribe. While the film focuses on Canada’s law, the issue of blood quantum requirements and discrimination are still applicable to the United States according to Talia London, NASU club member.

Following the film there will be a panel discussion that will cover topics such as blood quantum laws and discrimination against individuals that claim a Native American ancestry. The panel will be made up of Native American Western students, professors and local community members.

For more information about the event, or for disAbility accommodations, contact either Talia London by e-mail at londont@students.wwu.edu or the Social Issues Resource Center at (360) 650-6804.
