WWU Marine Scientist Suzanne Strom Honored With Prestigious ASLO Fellowship

Western Washington University’s Suzanne Strom has been named to the inaugural class of ASLO Fellows by the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography; the honor is given to ASLO members who have advanced the aquatic sciences through their exceptional contributions and research.

Strom is a senior marine scientist at Western’s Shannon Point Marine Center in Anacortes. Her main areas of research include long-term study of planktonic ecosystems in the Gulf of Alaska and the Salish Sea, and experimental investigation into predator-prey interactions among marine micro-organisms.

“ASLO is one of the oldest and most venerated of scientific societies, and for Dr. Strom to be included in the inaugural class of fellows is a great honor,” said Erika McPhee-Shaw, director of Shannon Point. “Her election confirms how much her national and international colleagues respect her contribution to the scientific community and her non-stop mentoring of students over the course of her career, and acknowledges the kind of teamwork and community effort necessary to do work in oceanography.”

Strom received her bachelor’s degree in Biology in 1981 from Middlebury College, her master’s degree in Biology from Harvard University in 1983, and her doctorate in Biological Oceanography from the University of Washington in 1990. She was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Texas at Austin, and has been at Western since joining the staff at Shannon Point as a research associate in 1992.

“I'm honored by this recognition because it means that my colleagues value the work I have done and my career contributions to ASLO, one of the leading scientific associations in my field,” Strom said.

The inaugural class of ASLO fellows will be honored at the ASLO meeting in Santa Fe, New Mexico, in June. For more information on her ASLO Fellowship, contact Suzanne Strom at (360) 650-7400 or Suzanne.strom@wwu.edu.
