WWU community health student spends summer working with youth in Uganda

Kristen Pettet, a senior community health major at Western Washington University, is in Uganda this summer completing her full-time internship with the VOLSET Foundation. Pettet, working in Uganda's Mukono district, is involved in health education at the Future Diplomats Education Centre, a not-for-profit school that works to prepare less fortunate and orphaned youth for a self-supporting and sustainable future through educational support, health outreach programs, economic development and spiritual nurturing.

Pettet recently sent in this photo of her and others bailing water from the school after a recent downpour.

Pettet is not the first WWU student to work with VOLSET. Recent community health graduate Erin Larsen-Cooper served in the Peace Corps with VOLSET and at present is completing her master's degree in public health at the University of Washington.

The Community Health Program is part of the Physical Education, Health and Recreation Department at WWU.
