Western named among beautiful coastal campuses

Western Washington University has been named to a list of “30 Most Beautiful Coastal College Campuses” by Best Value Schools, an independent web-based school-choice website designed to help high schoolers find the right school at the best value.

The 30 schools on the list were chosen based on criteria including location; awards and recognition; student enjoyment; and notable features. Some of the other colleges and universities making the list included the University of Hawaii at Hilo, University of California at San Diego, University of California at Santa Barbara, Pepperdine University, and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Western, which came in 16th on the list, was described as “a peaceful Pacific Coast refuge that has been described as ‘magical’ on more than one occasion. Red-brick pathways wind their ways through the conifer-scented campus and are enjoyed by both students and the local deer population.”

“Campus gems include the Wilson Library Reading Room (nicknamed “The Harry Potter Room”), Haskell Plaza and its grassy mounds organized into a rough map of the San Juan Islands, and the impressive Performing Arts Center Plaza. Views of the aforementioned islands and Bellingham Bay are visible from most of campus, while the nearby town of Bellingham boasts pubs, live music venues, and a number of well-received restaurants.”

Western President Bruce Shepard agreed with the analysis.

“We’re honored to be considered among the nation’s most beautiful coastal campuses. Western is blessed not only with a superb location between the Salish Sea and the Cascades, Seattle and Vancouver, but an outstanding facilities and grounds staff to make the most of it. We’re proud to not just be a destination for students, but art and nature lovers as well,” he said.
