Tonight: 'Sisters of the Gion'

Mizoguchi Kenji's 1936 film "Sisters of the Gion," the first Masters of Japanese Cinema Series film of 2015, will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 6 at Pickford Film Center in downtown Bellingham.

Set in the famous geisha district of Gion in Kyoto, the plot concerns two sisters who work as geisha. While the older sister has traditional attitudes about loyalty towards patrons, the younger sister (Yamada) deeply resents the position she is in and tries to do something about it.

This film will be introduced by film series curator Jeff Purdue, who is also a librarian at Western Libraries.

Co-sponsored by Western Libraries, the Masters of Japanese Cinema series is one of the Pickford's longest running and most loved series. Each film in the series begins with an introduction from select speakers including local professors, artists, and educators.
