Theatre and Dance to present 'Terra Nova' Nov. 9-13 on campus

The Western Washington University Department of Theatre and Dance will present “Terra Nova,” directed by Charlotte Guyette, Nov. 9-13 on the Performing Arts Center Mainstage.

Written by Ted Tally, “Terra Nova’s” magic heightens the fascinating real life story of the ill-fated 1911-1912 South Pole expedition led by Englishman Robert Falcon Scott where five Englishmen and five Norwegians raced to Antarctica. Only the five Norwegians returned. The play follows the last weeks of Captain Scott’s trek with his crew in their efforts to plant the Union Jack and be the first men to conquer the last unexplored territories. “Terra Nova” is a very human story of men struggling against the extreme, facing the realities of life and death decisions that can only splinter the mind.

“Theatre for me has always been about discovering the kind of metal we as human beings are truly made of. ‘Terra Nova’ is a play that that gets down to the core of that exploration and does it in a beautifully intricate and inventive fashion,” said director Charlotte Guyette. “It is based in the flesh and blood of historical events and has been a delight to work on from the very start. The enticing theatricality of the play is beautifully expressed through all of the design elements, which I think the audience will find very appealing.”

“Terra Nova” will show at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday through Saturday, Nov. 9-12, as well as at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 13. All performances will be held in the PAC Mainstage Theater.
