The Sky Colony to play Western July 8

Taking the stage next at the 2015 Summer Noon Concert Series is new dream folk band from Skagit Valley, The Sky Colony, whose members feature Ben Meyer, 26, on electric guitar and vocals, Kyle Findley-Meier, 27, on acoustic guitars and vocals, and Molly Hazel, 26, on banjo and vocals.

The concert will take place at noon July 8 on the PAC Plaza.

What started as a three-person group with a separate lyricist who was momentarily funding and marketing the project in a trailer placed on a hill below a small farm outside of Sebastopol, Calif. in May 2012, has now worked its way up into a successful touring band along the west coast.

After parting separate ways with the lyricist and producer, Findley-Meier and Meyer re-wrote the lyrics to the songs and began performing once again.

“We decided to name our band The Sky Colony because we like the imagery,” Findley-Meier said.

Aside from being in a band, Findley-Meier currently works at a recreational marijuana warehouse and said he’s been into plants, gardening, permaculture, cultural research and landscaping.

In the winter of 2012, Molly Hazel joined the group after graduating from the Master’s College in Southern California with a bachelor of arts degree in banjo.

The Sky Colony released their debut album, “In a Dream,” on Feb. 7.

Attendees can expect to hear one of the band’s top hit songs, “Be Loved,” performed that afternoon.

The Sky Colony has performed in Bellingham several times at places such as Kulshan Brewery, The Honeymoon, The Green Frog and many more.

“We had an amazing time,” Findley-Meier said.

The significance of this show for the band is that it kicks off a Western tour, Findley-Meier said.

“We’re going as far as Nevada and Northern California, so it’s kind of cool that it's the first show and we have to leave right after the show and go to the next stop,” he said.

Next up on their summer 2015 tour, The Sky Colony will be traveling to perform five more shows in Port Townsend, Raymond and Longbeach through July 13.

The Summer Noon Concerts are set to continue to take place throughout July at noon on Wednesdays on the PAC Plaza.

Admission to this casual concert series, sponsored by the AS Summer Program, is free.

Performing next Wednesday, July 15, will be The Female Fiends.
