Students re-envision outdoor objects

Western Washington University’s Industrial Design studio partnered with Architectural Elements of Bellingham to host a competition for 13 junior students in the industrial design program.

Over the course of three months, students were challenged to re-imagine objects designed for outdoor spaces such as parks, urban areas, and corporate campuses.  The students worked closely with Architectural Elements as they designed fully feasible concepts for public outdoor installations covering diverse product categories.

Architectural Elements and the Barkley Company contributed $3,500 in scholarships which were awarded to the students with winning designs, and Architectural Elements will be making full-sized prototypes of the designs for an upcoming exhibition.

The first place scholarship of $1,500 was awarded to Zak Basher of Yelm, the second place scholarship of $1,000 was awarded to Emma Nestvold of Bellevue, the third place scholarship of $500 was awarded to Nolan Shinn of Vashon Island, and Adam Boroughs of Vashon Island received honorable mention and a $500 scholarship.
