Outback Farm to hold kickoff work party Sunday

The Associated Students Outback Farm will hold its yearly kickoff work party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 30, at the farm, located between Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies and the Buchanan Towers residence hall on the Western Washington University campus.

The Outback, a joint program of the Associated Students and Fairhaven College, is a 5-acre farm and wetland restoration site on campus. The purpose of the Outback is to coordinate opportunities for students to learn about, develop and implement sustainable land use practices. Opportunities include personal and collaborative events and projects involving habitat restoration, organic gardening, green building, academic partnerships, independent study projects, workshops, lectures and classes.

The Outback also provides job-related skill building and community networking opportunities for students, including serving on the Outback Governing Council, volunteering and participating in work-study and salaried employment.

Volunteer work parties take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Sunday throughout the school year. At the kickoff event, there'll be square dancing, food tasting and more.
