Original, collaborative 'Soapbox' ends run May 18

Western Washington University’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents “Soapbox,” a devised piece directed by Western’s Theatre faculty Rich Brown, through May 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Mainstage Theater. An additional 10:30 p.m. show will take place on May 18.

The show previously has been onstage May 9, 10, 11 and 15.

“Soapbox” is a collaboratively created production that began with an academic course in September 2012 with 24 Western students. The students spent the year researching, creating, developing and rehearsing the work, which will make its debut on the PAC Mainstage.

The production is directed by Rich Brown, who received the 2012 Kennedy Center’s American College Theatre Festival’s National Award for Outstanding Lead Deviser/Director of a Devised Piece for Western’s production of “US.”

Created for a college-aged audience, “Soapbox” asks, “how will you balance time and money; technology and relationships; and living for yourself or helping others, during your personal pursuit of happiness?”

With original song, dance, characters both realistic and theatrical, and moments both comic and dramatic, audience members will be entertained as they explore this deeply personal question.

Intended for mature audiences, “Soapbox” contains adult content and language. Seating for the piece is limited as patrons will be on the PAC Mainstage with the actors.

Tickets are available through the WWU Box Office and cost $12 for general admission; $10 for seniors, WWU faculty and staff; and $8 for students.

WWU Box Office hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and open one hour prior to the performance.
