L.K. Langley Hired as Western’s Inaugural LGBTQ+ Director

L.K. Langley will serve as Western’s inaugural LGBTQ+ director, Melynda Huskey, vice president for WWU Enrollment and Student Services, announced today.

“I am very pleased to announce the appointment of L. K. Langley as Western’s inaugural LGBTQ+ director. Langley is well-known to the Western community, having served for six years in Western’s Equal Opportunity office,” Huskey said.

“Prior to Western, Langley served on the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association, and founded that organization’s Committee on Transgender Inclusion. They also served as a member of the grassroots Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition’s Legislative Committee. In Washington D.C., they served on the National LGBTQ Task Force as a Transgender Civil Rights Project Law Fellow. Their work was instrumental in successfully changing legislative policy to benefit underrepresented communities,” Huskey said.

During the national search process, Langley demonstrated a clear commitment and ability to lead Western’s inclusion efforts for LGBTQ+ communities and to engage in meaningful collaboration with students, faculty, staff and administrators across the university.

“I am inspired by this opportunity to partner with colleagues and students throughout Western to advance the holistic thriving of diverse LGBTQ+ students, faculty and staff,” said Langley. “The work of LGBTQ+ inclusion is relevant across disciplines and departments, and I look forward to furthering Western’s commitment to academic excellence and inclusive achievement in this new role.”

Huskey offered congratulations and appreciation to the search committee, chaired by Tim Costello, for their dedicated service in conducting the search. Aug. 6 will be Langley’s first day.

“We look forward to welcoming Langley to the ESS leadership team,” Huskey said.
