Liz Gerring Dance Company to perform Oct. 28

Western Washington University’s Department of Theatre and Dance will host a “Liz Gerring Dance Company Showcase” at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, in Western’s Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.

Presented as part of a WWU Theatre and Dance residency with The Liz Gerring Dance Company, the showcase will spotlight company members Adele Nickel, Brandin Steffensen, Jessica Weiss and Claire Westby performing excerpts of their newest untitled work (world premiere in 2013) and the acclaimed “she dreams in code” (2011). “she dreams in code” was presented in August at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival to full houses and excellent reviews. Company founder and renowned New York choreographer, Liz Gerring, will introduce the program.

The event is free and open to the public.

In addition to the Sunday showcase, Liz Gerring and Elizabeth Dement of The Liz Gerring Dance Company will offer an intermediate modern dance master class from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26 in the PAC Concert Hall. The master class is open to the public.

Members of The Liz Gerring Dance Company will be in residence on Western’s campus from Oct. 18-29. During their stay they will set the choreography for “she dreams in code” on WWU Dance students who will recreate the work as part of the Dance Faculty Concert in April 2013.

Since its inception in NYC in 1998, The Liz Gerring Dance Company has been exploring non-narrative, abstract movement, often derived from natural gesture. Works are characterized by their intense physicality and intricate choreography. Movement is evolved from cause and effect rather than storytelling, and framed by independent media elements – often a multi-channel sound score, or video set design.
