Human Rights Film Festival opens tonight

The 13th Annual Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival opens tonight  downtown at the Pickford Film Center, followed by nine nights of films on campus in the Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies Auditorium and across other venues.

 

The festival schedule is as follows:

 

Thursday 2/21

7 and 9 p.m.:  Bidder 70  (PFC) - University student bids at gas lease auction in Utah. Followed by a silent auction benefiting the BHRFF, from 6:30-9:00 p.m. Refreshments and auction between the shows.

 

Friday 2/22 

11:30 a.m.: Harvest of Empire (WCC) - Connection of U.S. interventions in Latin America to U.S. immigration challenges today.

7 p.m.: Dakota 38 (FCA) - Natives remember a massacre with a spiritual healing horse ride across the plains.

 

Saturday 2/23

Noon: Genetic Roulette (PFC) - Compelling evidence of GMO’s contributing to diseases.

7 p.m.: Within the Eye of the Storm (FCCB) - An Israeli and Palestinian, who have lost a child, unite for peace.

7 p.m.: Harvest of Empire (FCA) - Connection of U.S. interventions in Latin America to U.S. immigration challenges today.

 

Sunday 2/24  Matinees (FCA)

Noon:  Ocean Frontiers - New alliances between unlikely allies in ocean and coastal management.

1:15 p.m.:  On the Line - Two men travel the proposed route of a tar sands oil pipeline across wild Canada.

2:45 p.m.:  Peace Out - Environmental costs of modern energy demands in British Columbia.

7 p.m.:  My Neighbourhood - Israeli and Palestinian activists protest takeover of a home by settlers. One Family in Gaza - The effects of an Israeli attack on one family in Gaza.

 

Monday  2/25

11:30 a.m.: Bidder 70 (WCC) - University student bids at gas lease auction in Utah.

7 p.m.:  Heist (FCA) - Investigation of origin and effects of recent governmental deregulation.

 

Tuesday 2/26

5:30 p.m.: Peace Out (WCC) - Environmental costs of modern energy demands in British Columbia.  Trust: Inspiring profiles of teenaged environmental activists.

6 p.m.: The Thick Dark Fog (NWIC) - Lingering trauma of Indian boarding schools on one man’s life.

7 p.m.: Precious Knowledge (BHS)- Students stand up for Tucson’s Ethnic Studies program. 

Trust: Inspiring profiles of teenaged environmental activists. 

7 p.m.:  The Invisible War (FAC) - Sexual assault in the U.S. military.

 

Wednesday 2/27

11:30 a.m.: Genetic Roulette (WCC) - Compelling evidence of GMO’s contributing to diseases.

Noon: Schooling the World (BTC) - The often harmful effects of western education on indigenous cultures.

6 p.m.: Dakota 38 (NWIC) - Natives remember a massacre with a healing horse ride across the plains.

6:30 p.m.:  Precious Knowledge (SHS) - Students stand up for Tucson’s Ethnic Studies program.

7 p.m.: Heart of Sky, Heart of Earth (FCA) - Stories of young Mayans juxtaposed with modern exploitation of earth.

 

Thursday 2/28

11:30 a.m.: Heist (WCC) - Investigation of origin and effects of recent governmental deregulation.

Noon: Precious Knowledge (BTC) - Students stand up for Tucson’s  Ethnic Studies program.

6 p.m.: The Invisible War (BTC) - A disturbing account of sexual assault in the U.S. military.

6 p.m.:  Heart of Sky, Heart of Earth (NWIC) - Stories of young Mayans juxtaposed with modern exploitation of the earth.

6:30 p.m.: Trust (SHS) - Inspiring profiles of teenaged environmental activists.

7 p.m.: Delicious Peace in a Coffee Bean (FCCB) - Farmers of three faiths unite to form a coffee growers’ cooperative in Uganda.

7 p.m.: Schooling the World (FCA) - The often harmful effects of western education on indigenous cultures. Followed by: Precious Knowledge - Students become academic warriors for Tucson’s Ethnic Studies program.

 

Friday 3/1   

7 p.m.: Scarred Lands and Wounded Lives (FCA) - The effects of recent wars on the environment.

Noon:  The Thick Dark Fog - Lingering trauma of Indian boardin schools on one man’s life.

1:45 p.m.: The Suffering Grasses  - Origins and nature of Syrian civil war.

3 p.m.: War Made Easy - Government’s use of propaganda to overcome resistance to war.

7 p.m.: Closing Short Activism Films (FCA)

Peacemaker:  Bellingham peace activist Howard Harris.

Trust: Profiles enaged environmental activists.

Honor the Treaties: Viewing a South Dakota native reservation through the lens of a photographer, who then becomes an advocate.

Poetry of Resilience: International poets eloquently narrate their experiences of political violence.
