Dr. Seuss characters come to life in 'Seussical'

Western Washington University Department of Theatre and Dance presents “Seussical,” directed by Deb Currier, on Aug. 2-5 in the Performing Arts Center Mainstage Theater.

A magical musical extravaganza, “Seussical” brings to life all of the favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie, and a little boy with a big imagination – Jojo.

“Seussical” will make you laugh and cry as you follow Horton the Elephant on his adventures. Faced with the challenge of having to guard an abandoned egg while also protecting his tiny friend Jojo from a world of naysayers and dangers, Horton endures ridicule, peril, kidnapping, and a trial. Through all of Horton’s hardships, his friend Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him and “his kind and his powerful heart.” Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community emerge triumphant.

A beautiful musical, the audience will be transported from the Jungle of Nool, to the Circus McGurkus, and the invisible world of the Whos in a production packed with the spirit of imagination.

“Seussical” will show at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 2-4, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5.

Tickets are available through the WWU Box Office and cost $12 for general admission; $10 for seniors, WWU faculty and staff; and $8 for students. A limited selection of tickets will also be available at Village Books and the Community Food Co-op.
