Award-winning Author Mary Doria Russell to Visit Western’s Fairhaven College Nov.2

Western Washington University’s Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies will host Mary Doria Russell for a discussion of her best-selling book, “The Sparrow,” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2 in the Fairhaven Auditorium.

The event is free and open to the public.

“The Sparrow” (1996), was chosen as one of the Ten Best Books of the Year by Entertainment Weekly and won the Arthur C. Clarke Prize, for British Science Fiction in 1998. The sequel, “Children of God” (1998), won the Friends of the Library U.S.A. Reader’s Choice Award and was nominated for the Hugo Award. Russell’s visit is in conjunction with a Fairhaven seminar offered fall quarter 2016, titled “God, Forgiveness and Science Fiction.” 

Russell’s other books:

  • “A Thread of Grace,” a story of the Jewish underground during Nazi occupation of Italy, which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
  • “Dreamers of the Day,” a novel about the 1921 Cairo Peace Conference.
  • “DOC,” a murder mystery in Dodge City about Wyatt Earp and Doc Holiday.
  • “Epitaph,” a novel about the O.K. Corral gunfight.
