Artist Amy Chaloupka to Lecture at WWU Nov. 19

The Western Washington University Department of Art will play host to artist Amy Chaloupka for a 4:30 p.m. lecture on Monday, Nov. 19, in Fine Arts building Room 238.

Chaloupka, who earned a bachelor’s degree in Studio Arts from Western, will address ideas surrounding professional practice and what students can expect to face in a post-graduate environment. The talk is free and open to the public.

Chaloupka worked as a curator at the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Wisconsin for more than five years where she curated dozens of shows. She still serves as a consultant for the Kohler Center and recently moved back to the Northwest to continue her studio work.

After receiving her bachelor’s degree from Western, Chaloupka attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison where she received her master’s degree in Art in 2005 and her master’s in Fine Arts in 2006. She has hosted several exhibitions in Washington and Wisconsin and is inspired by the concept of mapping.

“In varied formats, mapping is the structure of my work,” said Chaloupka. “Whether using the map object directly to reorder landscape into an ideal construction, or creating imaginary terrains by mapping site-specific environments, it is the core of my material representation.”

Chaloupka’s lecture is part of the 2012-2013 WWU Department of Art Speaker Series, “Studies in Intermedia.” In addition to Chaloupka, the series has featured artists Douglas Kahn, Adrienne Fast, and Gala Bent during the fall quarter.
