Alexander Kobrin to play in Sanford-Hill series May 5

Western Washington University’s Sanford-Hill Piano Series will feature Alexander Kobrin in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.

The evening program will include works by Joseph Haydn, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Robert Schumann.

Born in Moscow, Russia, Alexander Kobrin is the winner of numerous international piano competitions, most notably the Van Cliburn International Competition. He has also won top prizes at the Neigauz, Busoni, Hamamatsu, Glasgow, Caltanissetta, and the Warsaw Chopin International Competitions, as well as received numerous special awards for his brilliant technique and musicality.

Kobrin balances his busy performance schedule around the world with his passion for teaching. Whether performing or instructing, Kobrin focuses on the path of the emotional approach to music and aims to inspire others to also connect with music in this meaningful way.

In addition to his evening recital, Kobrin will conduct a master class from noon until 2 p.m. on Friday, May 4, in the PAC Concert Hall. The master class is free and open to the public.

Tickets for the concert are available through the WWU Box Office and cost $9 students; $18 seniors, WWU faculty and staff; $24 general. A limited selection of tickets will also be available at Village Books and the Community Food Co-op.

Now in its ninth season, the Sanford-Hill Piano Series has been renamed to coincide with exciting changes, including the growing number of distinctive pianists presented by the series and a new Steinway concert grand piano for performances.
