Flamenco week continues with film today, performance Saturday

Flamenco week continues at Western Washington University with a screening of the film "Flamenco," directed by Carlos Saura, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Fraser Hall Room 3. "Flamenco" is considered a documentary masterpiece in its portrayal of the essence of flamenco dance and song. Penny Hutchinson, an assistant professor in the Dance Department, and Paqui Paredes, an associate professor of Modern and Classical Languages, will provide a short introduciton to the film. This event is open to all.

Then, on Saturday, Isabel Fernández López, master of the flamenco dance, will bring her company to the Performing Arts Center for an evening of flamenco dance and music beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The event, called “Flamenco Desde Abajo,” or “Flamenco from the Ground Up,” will feature Fernández López dancing in the company of Felipe Mato, with guitarists Morito and Jordi Albarrán, Diego Villegas in flute/harmonics, and singers El Trini and Sara Salado. On their tour, the artists also will perform in New York City; Washington, D.C.; Seattle; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Panama.

Tickets are $5 for students and $15 for general admission. They may be purchased at Village Books in Fairhaven, the Community Food Co-Op in Bellingham and the WWU Box Office at (360) 650-6146 or http://tickets.wwu.edu.

Free parking for the event is available in Parking Lot 12A on the WWU campus. Pay parking is available in Parking Lot 14G.
