Rosses have paper published in book dedicated to memory of alum Garry Jones

C.A. Ross (Geology research associate) and J. R. P. Ross (Biology, emeritus) had their paper "Paleontology, a Tool to Resolve Late Paleozoic Structural and Depositional Histories" published in "Geologic Problem solving with Microfossils: A volume in honor of Garry Jones," Special Publication 93. The paper appears on pages 95 to 109 of the book, edited by T.D. Demchuk and A.C. Gary. The book is published by the Society for Sedimentary Geology.

The whole volume is also special to Western Washington University. Garry Jones was an MS graduate student in Geology at WWU in the 1970s and completed an excellent thesis that was published in the Journal of Paleontology. In addition, Garry was gregarious, thoughtful of his fellow students and interacted well with them and the Geology faculty. He had a good Welsh family background! Garry then went on to the University of Delaware, where, in his Ph.D. studies, he was able to successfully resolve a difficult biostratigraphic problem that had a long and contentious history. When he finished at the University of Delaware, Garry was hired by a petroleum company and quickly learned the ins and outs of applying micropaleontology to finding oil and gas. In the process, he interacted with many other people, including many from other petroleum companies, and became well-liked for his knowledge, ability to listen carefully, and to evaluate conflicting data with an open mind. At many national meetings he taught industrial 'short-courses' with others from many companies. In 2000, Garry became an adjunct professor at Rice University where he taught Applied Biostratigraphy on nearly an annual schedule. He was the organizing force behind the very successful 2005 national meeting on the use of micropaleontology in the oil industry. He died unexpectedly in 2004 (ironically while taking a health exam for overseas travel). Garry's colleagues in the North American Micropaleontology Section of SEPM decided to organize this volume in his honor and memory. Garry leaves behind his wife, Mary, and two young daughters.
