Environmental Studies’ Scott Miles invited to United Nations’ Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction

Scott Miles, Western Washington University assistant professor of Environmental Studies, has been invited to participate in the United Nations’ 3rd Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction to be held May 8 to 13 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Global Platform, which is managed by the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction, is a forum for information exchange and discussion with the goal to improve implementation of disaster risk reduction through better communication and coordination amongst stakeholders. At the event, more than 2,000 policy makers and practitioners will gather to assess and share information.

Miles was also named a guest associate editor for the Natural Hazards Review on the topic of disaster resilience. The Natural Hazards Review is a journal for researchers and practitioners to publish the results for approaches on loss reduction and long-term disaster resiliency.

WWU’s Huxley College of the Environment and the Resilience Institute will offer a Disaster Risk Reduction minor beginning fall 2011. It will be available for all Western students.
