EHS: Do what you can to be fire safe

The Environmental Health and Safety Department urges the Western Washington University community to be safe with fire this summer.

Due to the hot, dry weather the Pacific Northwest has been experiencing this month, extreme care needs to be taken with respect to fire danger. In these conditions, WWU faculty, staff and students should think of all possible ignition sources beyond just open flame. Some to consider are: vehicle, mower, and other equipment operation in dry grass or bushy areas; welding and cutting; cigarette butts that are not properly extinguished.

Local and state agencies have enacted burn bans on all outdoor burning, including recreational fires. Grills can still be used, but operators should be extremely careful when disposing of any fire remnants.
