East College Way now open to bicycle travel

East College Way is now open to bicycle travel.

This route has been re-paved and re-striped at the conclusion of the Miller Hall construction project. Motorists should be aware that East College way is a shared route and cyclists may take the lane for safety reasons and in order to make left turns into parking areas. East College Way travels the length of the WWU campus core, along the east side of campus, from South College Drive to Old Main. Covered bike parking is newly located at the north end of Miller Hall. Cyclists and motorists should be aware of pedestrian rights of way at crossings along the route and abide by the speed limit of 10 mph.

When utilizing shared paths within the core of campus, cyclists should be aware of the campus cycling rules:

  • Pedestrians always have the right of way in walk zones as well as on shared paths within campus.
  • Speed limit is 3 mph (walking speed) on all campus paths, within 10 feet of pedestrians
  • Current dismount zones: Red Square, VU Plaza, ET/Fine Art/Carver corridor, 9 a.m. to 4 .p.m on class days during the academic year
  • Use a bell or voice to give pedestrians warning before you pass
    • A bike is a very quiet mode of transportation, and pedestrians are not always aware that a cyclist is approaching, especially from behind.
    • Being overtaken (especially at speeds greater than 3 mph) can be startling as well as very dangerous for a pedestrian.
    • Without the awareness of a cyclist approaching, a pedestrian might change their direction of travel without notice. A collision can result, with the possibility of injury to all involved.

Campus paths are intended for safe travel by all; please cycle courteously, at walking speed on all shared campus paths, using audible signals and dismounting in walk zones.

A WWU bicycling guide and campus map, showing routes and walk zones is available online.
