Earth-friendly events to celebrate Sustainability Week at WWU Oct. 24 to 28

A handful of events will be held throughout campus Oct. 24 to 28 as Western Washington University celebrates its achievements in sustainability during Sustainability Week 2011.

The week-long series of events will highlight some of the most exciting aspects of the WWU campus, including student advocacy, local food in the dining halls and sustainability in the curriculum. Students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to explore different avenues for action and involvement within Western Sustainability.

Monday, Oct. 24:

  • “Meet your Local Farmer”
    University Dining is committed to sourcing sustainably produced food. Learn about the Real Food Challenge and the local vendors WWU partners with during lunchtime at the Viking Commons dining hall.
    Viking Commons Dining Hall, 11:00-1:30.
  • Film: In Search of Good Food
    The WWU Student Food Coop presents this documentary film tour of California’s emerging sustainable food system.
    Viking Union 552, 7 pm

Tuesday, Oct. 25:

  • Western Sustainability: Past, Present & Future
    Bring your lunch and come hear about what makes up Western Sustainability and where we can grow from here.
    Brown Bag Lunch Presentation, Communications Facility 105, 12pm-1pm

Wednesday, Oct. 26:

  • Farm to Table Lunch
    All three WWU dining halls will feature a delicious local and sustainably sourced menu for lunch.
    Fairhaven, Ridgeway, and Viking Commons dining halls, 11:00 am -1:30 pm
  • Panel Discussion “Cherry Point: Bellingham and Beyond”
    Come listen to a panel of stakeholders from both sides of the Cherry Point Coal Export Terminal debate and get informed on a proposal that will impact on Bellingham and Whatcom County.
    Fraser Hall 4, 5-7 pm
  • Environmental Club Info Fair
    Learn about the many environmental clubs and organizations at Western and how you can get involved.
    Academic Instruction Center (AIC) lobby, 10 am – 2 pm

Thursday, Oct. 27:

  • Western’s 1st Annual Sustainability Awards
    Celebrate Western’s leadership as a sustainability innovator as four individuals, groups or projects are honored for their contribution to Western Sustainability. Keynote speaker: Dale Mikkelsen, Simon Fraser University.

Friday, Oct. 28:

  • Northwest Higher Education Sustainability Consortium (NWHESC) Meet and Greet #2
    Join sustainability champions from Whatcom Community College, Northwest Indian College, Bellingham Technical College, Skagit Valley Community College and Western to make new connections and collaborate on campus sustainability initiatives.
