'Don Giovanni' set for March 7, 9 and 11 on campus

Western Washington University’s Department of Music will present “Don Giovanni,” an opera in two acts with music by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte on March 7, 9 and 11 in the Performing Arts Center Mainstage on the Western campus.

The opera is directed by Western affiliate music professor Kathryn Weld and the pianist is affiliate music professor Jay Rozendaal.

“Don Giovanni is a musical and dramatic masterpiece, presenting plenty of challenges for all involved. It was very exciting to find students in the music program who could present this remarkable and complex opera at Western,” said Rozendaal.

The cast are natives of Bellingham, Seattle, Tacoma, Longview, Oak Harbor and Spokane. Four of the eight principals are graduating students who will soon, or have recently, auditioned for top-level graduate programs.

Both comic and tragic, the opera tells the story of Don Giovanni, a powerful yet doomed man. As a scoundrel, charmer, womanizer and nobleman, Don’s conquests, mishaps and his final journey – to hell – are revealed in one of the most beloved operas worldwide.

“Don Giovanni” will show at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 7 and Friday, March 9 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday Mar. 11. All performances will be held in Western’s Performing Arts Center Mainstage.
