Diversity Teach-in to feature David Stovall on race and rights

The winter Diversity Teach-in at Western Washington University will feature keynote speaker David Stovall, who will present "Justice Does Not Happen in a Vacuum: Race, Rights and the Possibility of Now" from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 8, in Fraser Hall Room 102.

In his presentation, Stovall will discuss violence against black communities and other communities of color, placing today's youth movements within a context of community resistance to systems of racialized oppression and violence, ultimately urging educators and leaders to move beyond tough talk. This presentation is free and open to the public.

David Stovall, Ph.D., is a professor of Educational Policy Studies and African-American Studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has written extensively about race, racism and the role of community in creating transformative schools. His scholarship investigates critical race theory, concepts of social justice in education, the relationship between housing and education and the relationship between schools and community stakeholders. He has spent the past 10 years working with community organizations and schools to develop curriculum that address issues of social justice. He also serves as a volunteer social studies teacher at the Lawndale Little Village School of Social Justice.
