Department of music to present 'Collegium Musicum' concert May 11

Western Washington University’s Department of Music will present a concert by the instrument group “Collegium Musicum” at 8 p.m. on May 11 in Western’s Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The Collegium Musicum plays music from the Medieval period through the Classical era.

Conducted by Western Music Professor Bertil van Boer, the Collegium ensemble will perform the “Birthday Cantata for Swedish King Gustav III,” composed in 1782 by Joseph Martin Kraus, often referred to as the “Swedish Mozart.”

This will be the first time the complete piece has been performed since the 18th century. Soloists will include Kristen Swenson (Vocal Performance, Shoreline), Jonathan Suek (Music, Longview), AnaMia Keelym (Vocal Performance, West Seattle), Andrea Paulson (Vocal Performance and Music Education, Deming), and Rosemary Hamington (Vocal Performance, Arcadia, Calif.), along with the Collegium orchestra.
