Creative writing samples, National Archives photos on display in President/Provost’s Office

This fall Western piloted “Viking Launch,” a fall early start program for freshmen. Arriving 10 days early, these freshmen completed an intensive academic seminar designed to “launch” them into their academic careers at Western. One seminar, “Introduction to Creative and Technical Writing,” introduced students to the art and craft of creative writing.

Students researched photos at the National Archives and selected a photo to write about, crafting fictional vignettes and nonfiction essays about the images.

The students' stories and the accompanying photos are on display now in Old Main Room 450 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The National Archives and Records Administration is the nation’s depository of records, documents and photos. The National Archives preserves both documentary and artistic photos. Many of the photos that are on display are drawn from the exhibit “The Way We Worked.” Other photos were selected by students from exhibits that focused on war and the Great Depression.
