Concussions in young athletes: Discussion set for Oct. 28 at City Hall

Michael Fraas of Western Washington University’s Communications Sciences and Disorders Department will give a lecture titled “Concussion in the Young Athlete: Considerations for Safe Return-to-Play and Return-to-Learn” from 7 – 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Bellingham City Council Chambers, 210 Lottie St., in Bellingham.

In the free, public talk, an installment of the WWU College of Humanities and Social Sciences Dean’s Lecture Series, Fraas will discuss concussions in young athletes.

Concussions in sports has gained a great deal of attention in the media. The presentation will explain the impact of concussions, and highlight ways to effectively treat concussion symptoms and safely return athletes to competition and to the classroom.

Fraas is an assistant professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Western. He is a member of the Cognitive Rehabilitation Task Force of the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. His research and teaching interests explore treatments for individuals with acquired brain injury.

The lecture will be recorded and shown on Bellingham TV Channel 10.
