Community members invited to welcome new students to campus

Members of the Western Washington University and Whatcom County communities are invited to join Western students, faculty and staff in welcoming new students to Western by forming a “human corridor” leading to Memory Walk at the close of Welcoming Convocation Sept. 25.

Memory Walk, a commencement tradition, began in 1912 when the first stone engraved with the class year was placed in the sidewalk running parallel to the front of Old Main. A stone representing every graduating class since that time is now in place in this walkway. Beneath each stone lies a time capsule. At the conclusion of commencement ceremonies, the graduates, led by the mace-bearer, the president’s party and the faculty, march out of Carver Gym to the steps of Old Main and place an item in their time capsule.
