Collegium musicum May 14 to feature rare, newly discovered music

The Department of Music at Western Washington University presents the annual concert of the collegium musicum at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 14, in the Performing Arts Center on the WWU campus. Admission is free.

The program features rare and newly discovered music from the Classical Period for voices and orchestra. Included are symphonies from the United States (a politically-charged overture), Malta and Norway, as well as a trio of intimate Notturnos by Czech composer Josef Myslivicek, marches by Joseph Haydn’s brother Michael, and an entire Swedish opera (in less than 20 minutes) by Joseph Martin Kraus. This work, and the Maltese symphony, are world premieres in the 21st century.
