CIIA offers professional development opportunities fall quarter

The Center for Instructional Innovation and Assessment at Western Washington University is offering a number of professional development opportunities for faculty and staff this fall:

  • A webinar, "The Broken Spoon: How to Use High Impact, Interactive Practices to Develop Higher Order Thinking," will be shown from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, in Viking Union Room 567. Attendees must register in advance. In the live webinar, from Innovative Educators, M.E. McWilliams, an award-winning learning center director at Austin State University, will share easy-to-implement techniques for creating interactive, high-impact experiences for students. These techniques apply to venues in the classroom as well as outside of the classroom and support the vision for students to think for themselves. Are you interested but cannot attend? Contact the CIIA for online archived access to this recording.
  • A peer teaching workshop will be held from 4 to 5 p.m. Dec. 1 in Miller Hall Room 115. Kendra Douglas, from Modern and Classical Languages/Linguistics, and her students Daniela Tinoco and Rebecca Donaldson will speak on strategic teaching techniques in which instructors direct students to engage their peers directly in teaching and learning.
  • The ongoing CIIA-ATUS collaboration of the “Learning Technology Group” has two more offerings this fall featuring tools to help engage students:
    • Wikis, Blogs, Journals: Oct. 25, Noon-1PM, Viking Union 567
    • Choice Session: Nov. 29, Noon-1PM, VU567 (Help us decide: Elluminate, Skype, Mobile Learning Tools, Polls, etc.)

Also, Innovative Teaching Showcase nominations are due Nov. 11. This year's theme is "Empowering Peer Learning." Nominate an instructor who integrates collaboration and teamwork into their courses in a phenomenal way.
