CIIA offers professional development opportunities

The Center for Instructional Innovation and Assessment has a number of professional development opportunities for faculty and staff:

  • FACULTY GUR GROUP - Gender in a Changing World: Through Nature via Nurture to a Humane Appreciation of Gender Diversity
    2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, and Thursday, Feb. 2, in Humanities Building Room 106
    How does one make sense of gender in a rapidly changing world when yesterday's norm, today's convention and tomorrow's possibilities have little in common? How does one study and teach gender issues in such a volatile and evolving environment? Lena Ericksen examines the changing nature of gender through history and the effect socioeconomic conditions have had on the rise of gender consciousness, the successive waves and versions of feminism, and the subcultures based upon gender orientation that have emerged.
  • WEBINAR - Re-Centering Teaching: 20+ Techniques for Promoting Active Learning
    10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27, in Viking Union Room 462B
    Join us in the Viking Union for a "site connection" to this live webinar, from Innovative Educators, where Dr. Bonnie Mullinix, (30 years educator experience, leadership positions at Greenville Technical College, the TLT Group, the POD Network, her consulting firm, etc.), will share techniques for effectively addressing your instructional challenges. She will specifically address how and when to most effectively utilize each technique to promote active engagement in learning. Are you interested but cannot attend?   • WORKSHOP - Teaching in the Round: Chalkboards, Whiteboards, Smartboards
    Noon to 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, in Miller Hall Room 038
    Join Kendra Douglas, Modern and Classical Languages/Linguistics, for a presentation and workshop on strategic teaching techniques in which instructors utilize all four walls of the classroom, via chalkboards, whiteboards, or Smartboards, for energizing student learning activities.

As well, the ongoing CIIA-ATUS collaboration of the “Learning Technology Group” has more offerings this winter featuring tools to help engage students.

  • Learning Technology Group – Mobile Learning
    Noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, in Viking Union Room 567
    Explore ways to reach students via mobile technology such as smartphones and tablets (iPhone, iPad, Android, etc.).
  • Learning Technology Group – Social Media in Higher Education
    Noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28, in Viking Union Room 567
    Explore promising methods of engaging students beyond the typical limitations of a face-to-face class period, with examples of using Twitter and Facebook in the classroom and around campus. You are invited to come "share" "like" or "comment" on this topic.
